Louisville’s music scene has always lived in the in-between—where hip-hop meets soul, gospel meets funk, and experimentation meets tradition. Producer and DJ shy!!! represents that intersection in a way that feels authentic to the city. His sound moves across genres, reflecting both the diversity of Louisville and the quiet confidence behind his artistry.
shy!!! grew up in Shively, a neighborhood that sits between Louisville’s West End and South End. That location mattered more than people might realize. Being surrounded by different cultures and musical influences shaped the way he hears music today. Louisville has always felt like a melting pot to him, and that variety shows up in his work as both a DJ and a producer. His sound doesn’t sit neatly in one box—it moves like a pot of gumbo, pulling pieces from everywhere.

Music was present in his life from the beginning. Raised in a Christian household, the soundtrack of his childhood was mostly gospel. Artists like Kirk Franklin and Tye Tribbett filled the house most of the time, with occasional appearances from classic soul acts like The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and The Temptations. That early exposure gave him a deep appreciation for musicality, harmony, and emotion in sound.
But as a kid, access to hip-hop and R&B wasn’t easy. Those genres existed mostly outside the boundaries of what he was allowed to listen to. Around 2013, that began to change. As a pre-teen, he started sneaking away to the library to discover music on his own. That curiosity opened the door to artists like Kanye West, J Dilla, 2Pac, D’Angelo, and Tyler, The Creator—artists whose creativity pushed him to think differently about what music could be. For a naturally quiet kid, digging through music became both exploration and escape.
By 2015, that curiosity had turned into action. During a summer camp at the Louisville Urban League, shy!!! found himself spending time with his elementary school friend Elijah, who had already started rapping. Elijah would freestyle constantly, and shy!!! would beatbox while he rapped. Around that same time, Louisville artist Bryson Tiller had just released “Don’t,” and hearing that someone from their city had just landed a record deal made the idea of music feel real. Instead of continuing to beatbox, shy!!! decided he would teach himself how to make beats.

His stage name eventually grew out of two things: personality and place. He was always a quiet kid growing up, and he also wanted to represent Shively—an area some people from the city didn’t always claim proudly. Earlier versions of his name came and went, but he eventually landed on shy!!!, a name that reflects his quiet nature while flipping the expectation. Even if he isn’t the loudest person in the room, his art demands attention.
Over time, that art has taken him into different creative rooms. He has collaborated with artists at multiple levels of the industry, including Louisville rapper Jack Harlow and longtime collaborator Horace Gaither. Each environment taught him something different about himself as a creator.
His connection with Harlow actually started years before they ever met. For several years he had been sending beats to Harlow’s email. When they finally connected in person in 2022 at Whirling Tiger, it opened the door to studio sessions and collaborative opportunities. One of their songs started from a simple moment—shy!!! making a beat quickly and sending it over.
Those studio environments, however, were very different from the way he normally works. Large sessions with multiple producers introduced him to a faster, more competitive pace where people were constantly creating under pressure. Being in rooms with producers like Boi-1da and Hollywood Cole exposed him to a high level of talent and discipline, but it also helped him realize that his best work often happens in a different kind of environment.
Working with Horace Gaither, on the other hand, feels natural. The two have known each other for years, and their sessions tend to flow without pressure or ego. That familiarity allows them to focus purely on making the best music possible, which has become one of the most important parts of shy!!!’s creative process.

That same sense of intuition shows up in his DJing. For shy!!!, producing and DJing constantly feed into each other. His understanding of rhythm, arrangement, and music theory allows him to blend songs together in unexpected ways. He enjoys mixing records that don’t seem like they belong together at first—until the moment they collide and suddenly make perfect sense. Digging for records for DJ sets often inspires new production ideas as well, whether it’s a sample, a groove, or a feeling he wants to recreate.
One of the most memorable moments of his DJ career so far came in 2024 when he performed at Gazebo Festival in Louisville. As the first performer of the day, he had the chance to set the tone for the entire event. With his friend Otez acting as hype man, the set became a celebration of Black music—moving through hip-hop, R&B, funk, Afrobeat, and even gospel. The crowd’s response confirmed that the energy connected exactly the way he hoped it would.

When it comes to producing, shy!!! doesn’t follow a strict structure. Some days a drum pattern comes first. Other days he starts by digging for samples or sitting at the keyboard. Sometimes artists bring ideas that he helps bring to life. But he’s found that his best work usually happens when he’s relaxed—often alone in his apartment, where there’s no pressure to rush an idea or force a sound.
That freedom carried into his recent project everythingisbeautiful!!!, a beat tape that reflects a complicated emotional period in his life. The previous year had been mentally difficult, but instead of focusing on the negative, he wanted the project to reflect perspective. The title itself became a reminder that even during challenging moments, there is still beauty and gratitude to hold onto. Each beat captures a different emotional state from that time, even though the project itself came together quickly.
Interestingly, much of shy!!!’s music isn’t created with placement in mind at all. He estimates that about 65 percent of the beats he makes are simply for himself. Experimentation is a big part of his process, and not every beat needs to be attached to an artist or a release. That freedom to experiment helps him stay creative and avoid chasing trends.

Still, collaboration remains important. He continues to work closely with artists like Horace Gaither while also collaborating with Shloob, Otez, Zelly, 4200 Kory, and Allen Vice. When he does send beats out, he’s selective. As a self-described perfectionist, he wants every record to feel intentional.
The future is already taking shape. Multiple projects are lined up, and he’s currently preparing to score a short film directed by Louisville filmmaker Fitzgerald Junior. More music, more collaborations, and more performances are on the horizon.
At the center of it all is a simple goal: creating experiences that leave people feeling something positive. Whether it’s a beat playing through headphones or a DJ set moving a crowd, shy!!! wants the energy of the music to reach people first.
